What will a dementia trained carer do?
Many of our Corinium Care carers have professional training in dementia alongside extensive first-hand experience. Our carers are on hand to help with personal care such as bathing and toileting as well as household duties such as cooking, cleaning and shopping, and to generally help make their client’s life as rich as possible.
Read our comprehensive Dementia Guide for everything you need to know about the condition.
What is dementia care at home?
Clients with dementia need a great deal of reassurance and support so as to alleviate feelings of isolation and to help them feel more oriented and settled. With full-time one-to-one care in the home, the quality of life, both for those with the condition and for their families, is greatly enhanced. It also provides a much loved alternative to leaving the familiar surroundings of home and moving into a residential care facility.
Dedicated care plan
A dementia home care plan is carefully tailored to the individual needs of the client, including an assessment of specific symptoms that are being experienced. By conducting a full home assessment while working with clients, their families, their GPs and other healthcare professionals, we are able to provide a completely personalised dementia care plan that meets the specific needs of the individual. You will also be given the opportunity to make informed decisions about the choice of live-in carer. We always take personal preferences into account.
Continuity of care
We try and propose the same regular carer for each client so they can build a good rapport based on mutual respect and understanding. The carer is employed for a minimum seven-day period on a live-in basis. They are fully informed of the routine and care aspects of the job before they go and are trained to cope with the needs of the particular client. We find that this is the most effective means by which to offer vital continuity and familiarity of routine to those living with most forms of dementia.
Professional training
Our fully trained carers move in to the home of the client living with dementia and provide full-time care and support according to the personalised care plan. This allows families to be safe in the knowledge that their relative’s days will be as free of anxiety as possible under the expert care of a patient and understanding professional.
Why does someone need dementia care?
- Memory loss – A live-in dementia carer is always around to reassure, remind and assist to ensure that daily tasks are maintained, such as taking medication. Our carers also help clients to create memory boxes and scrapbooks, including sentimental items and photographs, to help stimulate memories.
- Confusion and disorientation – Personalised live-in care is nurtured through familiarity and understanding, meaning our carers assist clients with calendar management and getting to where they need to go, while reassuring any fears when unsure about where they should be or what they need to do.
- Help around the home – A live-in dementia carer will focus primarily on the medical needs of clients, although they are also on hand to provide help around the home, assisting with basic daily tasks that the client may struggle with whilst giving enough freedom so as to allow them to retain control over their daily lives.
